JOYCE LO

Hi, I’m Joyce

I am a dance and collaborative artist, educator, and choreographer whose movement practice is rooted in classical ballet and shaped by my training in contemporary and modern dance forms.

I graduated magna cum laude with an Honours BFA degree from York University, Toronto, specializing in Dance Performance and Choreography. I studied with esteemed faculty including Julia Sasso, John Ottmann, and Helen Jones, and was also awarded several Fine Arts awards and scholarships. Most recently, I also completed my graduate studies in Dance, receiving my Master of Fine Arts degree from Montclair State University, and have now moved to Los Angeles.

My international dance training began in Trinidad & Tobago when I took part in the inaugural New Waves Dance and Performance Institute- an international forum for exchange on contemporary dance in the summer of 2011. There I worked with artists Makeda Thomas, Rennie Harris, Dyane Harvey-Salaam, Arcell Cabuag, among others. Since then I continued to seek international opportunities, dancing in London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, and Rome.

Beyond performing, I have produced dance films that have been selected for screening in multiple international film festivals including LA Dance Film Festival, was featured as one of nine choreographers at BalletFest 2022, and published two articles in the academic journal Dance Education in Practice. I co-choreographed and movement directed for “Free”, an award-winning music video produced by Negin Sairafi and artist Rhea Mehta, and stage-managed Launch Dance Center’s 2022 and 2023 production of the Nutcracker. I am also a freelance music editor for choreographers and dance teachers.

I am a registered teacher for the Royal Academy of Dance and hold my Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies. I have extensive experience instructing ballet, contemporary dance, and fitness classes to movers of all ages and abilities. My works have been recognized in both regional and international competitions including World Championships of Performing Arts and Youth America Grand Prix.

I am continually guided by creative curiosity, finding inspiration in the simple and profound moments of everyday life.
